Several months ago I was visited by an extraordinarily nice southern gentleman who showed me a very nice quality, but poorly proportioned diamond. It measured over 5 carats with great color and clarity. I presented him with a few options on how we could help. He thanked me for my time and left.
Last Monday he arrived back in our offices and asked us to market the diamond for him. A nice diamond of this size is relatively easy to market, but this one was poorly proportioned. In order to achieve an excellent price, we were going to have to work harder.
Peter had me show him the diamond, and upon looking at it got a quizzical look on his face, picked up the phone and went to work. Peter’s mind is remarkably sharp and his ability to see opportunity when others do not is one of the reasons he is so valuable to our company and our clients.
After making a few calls and asking someone on our staff to take measurements of the stone he called one important design house and told them to come up and look at the diamond we were marketing for our client. He knew they were looking for a high quality Pear Shape Diamond with similar proportions.
Upon examination the designer loved the diamond. It was a full carat bigger than he had expected for the necklace, but the proportions of the diamond made it a perfect fit.
So, a diamond that weighed almost 5.5 carats fit perfectly into a very important necklace that had been commissioned almost a year earlier. This is a necklace that will be sold for well over one $1,000,000. I will leave it to you to think of who may be buying it.
Thanks to Peter’s knowledge, we created a huge advantage for our client who had the perfect diamond for a desperate manufacturer. After explaining the situation, our client left it to us to decide the best way to approach this and get him the most money.
In the end, Peter was instrumental in achieving a 40% additional premium from the manufacturer and we have an extraordinarily happy client.
